Q: I am a newly accepted student at Biola University. I will be starting the in Fall. What do I do to purchase
a computer from the Biola Computer Store?
A: All you will need to do is send us (typically via fax or email) a copy of your Biola University acceptance letter
and then you may purchase from us. We will need to also obtain your new Biola student ID#.
Q: Should we buy a computer to use while at
Biola?
A: Yes. If you can afford to buy a personal computer, it is strongly recommended that you do so. Biola University has a number of computers accessible
to students in public clusters, but during peak times when major assignments are due, or toward the end of the semester, there is a great demand for them. Those who own
comptuers will not only have an easier time planning their couse work, but also more opportunities to do original work in their own areas of interest. In any discipline,
computer literacy is essential in today's job market.
Q: What kind should I buy?
A: Biola University doesn't have a single standard.
A faculty member of your department can give you good advice as to which computer is generally used in your course work and field of interest, and our consultants can
offer you professional advice concerning the features of each system: Window PCs, Unix-based computers, and Apple Computers.
Q: Why should I
make my computer purchase at the Biola Computer Store?
A: The Biola Information Technology Department maintains the Biola Computer Store as a service to
students, faculty, and staff. We are a non-profit organization and our salespeople do not receive commission. Our goal is to assist you in purchasing the appropriate
hardware and software for your academic needs. As the campus technology "store", the Biola Computer Store works constantly with vendors to obtain the best
possible pricing. The Biola Computer Store will offer you the best purchasing advice, service and price. Other sections of Information Technologies can help you learn
about the computer and programs through training classes (currently available to faculty/staff), give you advice over the telephone, or repair your computer when
necessary.
Q: What if I can't set up my new hardware?
A: Purchasers can drop the Computer Support center, located in Metzger Hall,
Lower East, for assistance with how systems are configured. The IT.Helpdesk in Computer Support will answer specific software or setup configuration questions. The manuals
that come with each computer are generally quite adequate with step-by-step setup instructions. Biola Telecom personnel do make house calls when troubleshooting
line-connection problems.
