Howard and Ginnie Davis
Uncle Howard and Aunt Ginnie Davis have been involved in Mentoring Ministries for many years. They first met during WWII when Howard was serving in the US Navy and leading Bible studies, while Ginnie was working in the navigators' office helping with High school girls' Bible studies.
They were married September 8, 1945, and after Howard retired from a career in education in 1982, the Lord led them to join a mission's organization that ministered to International Students. They eventually came into contact with Biola's international community and were immediately invited to become an 'Uncle' and 'Aunt' to the International Students.
Uncle Howard and Aunt Ginnie are on campus Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. You can find Uncle Howard either in Eagles Nest or the cafeteria. If it looks like he is busy studying, that's just because he is utilizing his time until someone wants to talk to him. No question is unimportant. Aunt Ginnie is available for small group Bible studies, or one-on-one encouragement.
Richard and Angie Stinchcombe
Hello, we are Richard and Angie Stinchcombe, two community friends to international students at Biola University. We are members of Calvary Chapel La Mirada, located at 15144 Leffingwell Rd., in La Mirada. We live in Buena Park, about 4 miles from Biola, and have lived in this area for 18 years now.
Richard was born in England and came to the US in his early 20's as a young Engineer. Angie was born in Germany. Her Dad was in the US Army stationed there, and the family came to the US shortly after WWII ended. Both of us look forward to helping new students. We welcome you to our community!
Through our church ministry, we offer a hand of welcome and friendship to new international students.
Some of the ways we help students are:
Provide transportation to and from the airport
Take you shopping, or show you around the area
Invite you to come to church with us
Spend holiday time with us and our family
Be your friend
Pray for you...
For some students, we meet and allow them to practice their English language skills. We have been serving students for the past four years. It has been a great joy to our lives and we have been enriched by the relationships we have been blessed by. Each and every student is truly a gift. Feel free to call us at 714-522-4319.
Deanna Frank
Hi! My name is Deanna Frank, and I began as a graduate student in the Talbot School of Theology in the fall of 2003. My hometown is Kansas City, Missouri, but after College, I have lived many different places! Let me tell you a bit about that, because it explains a lot about why I am interested in being with people from many different cultural backgrounds.
Right after I graduated from high school, I had the opportunity to visit a number of different countries in Europe, and also had home stays with 3 families in Austria, Germany, and England.
After college, I moved to San Francisco and was a member of a church, which had 6 different language congregations. I spent much of the time with the Japanese congregation. After 4 years, I moved to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Hawaii has many different cultures and is quite different from the rest of America, so I had great opportunities to learn about (and learn from) lots of people from other backgrounds. The next place I went to was Japan! During all of this time, I had been an elementary school teacher, and I now had the opportunity to teach in an international school in Sapporo. During that time, God taught me how He shows Himself in so many ways through His people of all cultures and nationalities, and how we are all one in Christ. God has now brought me here to California to study so that I can try a new avenue of ministry, and while I am here I would really like to continue to meet people from various cultures and, if there is some way I can be a friend to those students who are here studying away from their home country, I would like to do that. I know what it is like to have many things to adapt to, and even though it may not always be easy, it can be wonderful, and I hope that it will be a great experience for you! May God bless you richly as you study and grow in your relationship with Him.
In addition to the six featured here, there are many other valued members of the La Mirada community who love to help international students. They look forward to meeting you.
