Choosing a Major
The "Major Myth"
Contrary to popular belief, a major does not have to lock you into a specific
career path. The relationship of college majors to career fields varies. Though,
there are obviously some career choices which dictate a specific major, most
career fields don't require a specific major, and people with specific majors
don't have to use them in ways most commonly expected.
"Major Realities"
Most college majors don't offer specific preparation for a single type of work.
Instead they educate and assist you to create a complete personal and professional
package that can move you into the direction you want to go. Majors don't limit
you to one type of work, rather they prepare you for a variety of possibilities
and opportunity throughout your life. Choice of a major is only one factor in
determining your future job prospects and career direction.
So What's the Point of a Major?
Choosing a major is very important, as it provides a framework in which you
can grow and develop personally, interpersonally and professionally during your
college years. A major gives you an opportunity to focus on subject areas you
find interesting, to meet others with similar interests, and to begin exploring
various career fields.
Nevertheless, choosing a major is just the beginning of your career decision-making
process, and is one part of your college experience. It is the totality of who
you are, -- your personal qualities, academic preparation, practical skills
and experiences, interests, and interpersonal skills - which will give you direction
for a career path and open up opportunities for future jobs.
That is why enhancing your academic coursework with extracurricular activities
and career-oriented practical experiences will provide you with a more complete
college experience and most effectively prepare you for the world of work beyond
college.
Internships, part-time career-related jobs, and other practical learning experiences
are strongly recommended for preparing yourself for a rewarding career. Choosing
a major is an important first step.
