Is a Calling the same as a Career?
No. Your calling comes from God and reflects your fundamental identity. In some situations it makes sense for your calling to be expressed through an occupation, since this is where a large amount of time will be spent, but for some, their fundamental call of God is fulfilled outside of a career or alongside in a complementary role. Many people do not have a formal or clearly defined career, but everyone has a calling. We can lose our jobs; our formal career will come to an end at retirement, but our calling remains. For example, a person with a calling of bringing healing to others, can do this through an occupation in medicine or mental health, but if employment isn’t needed, can volunteer with the Red Cross or Hospice, or can have a ministry through church of praying for the sick. All are expressions of a calling from God to minister healing in this world.
