Research Interests

  • Event-Related Potential (ERP) Analyses of Self Regulation” We are currently testing a "strength" model of self-regulation proposed by Baumeister and others. The model suggests that self-regulation works like a "muscle" and that resources are depleted when used. We are examining cortical activity along with behavioral findings and will test to see if one can "exercise" and build up the muscle of self-regulation through practice.
  • Event-Related Potential (ERP) Analyses of Attachment” We are currently examining how people with different attachment styles process emotional and non-emotional stimuli by measuring cortical activity while viewing various words and pictures.
  • Event-Related Potential (ERP) Analyses of Anxiety” We are continuing to use both reaction time measures and electrophysiological measures to examine how anxious and non-anxious participants process threatening and non-threatening stimuli. We are also using a task to train anxious participants to be less biased toward threatening stimuli and finding out if this task changes the way the brain is processing these stimuli.
  • Implicit Measures of Attachment Styles” We are using several different implicit measures (e.g., implicit association test, Stroop task, lexical decision task) to examine how people with different attachment styles process information about relationships.

Activities

  • Lecturer, Department of Cognitive Sciences”, University of California, Irvine (2003-present)
  • Research involving undergraduates.” Topics of study include: Cognitive self-enhancement; Cognitive consistency theories as applied to voter decision-making and attitude formation; Effect of cognitive load on preparatory visual attention; Effect of task type on learning mirrored words (1998-present)
