What are some of the most exciting opportunities you have had since graduation?

Since graduation, I have steadily worked my way into creating an art career, while balancing family and making ends meet. I did not go to graduate school, and at this point I won't. My most exciting opportunities have been my time getting to know the interior workings of the business of art by working for Susanne Vielmetter. She has taken me to Art Basel Miami Beach the past few years, and the educational experience of those trips alone has been crucial for me. My first solo show in an established art institution was last year at LAXART. It resulted in my first extensive critical review and continues to lead to new opportunities.

How do you feel that the Biola art department prepared you for your life as an artist?

I spent four years at Biola, getting my degree in painting and drawing. As my only higher education, I truly feel as if it gave me exactly what I needed in order to orient me in the right direction. While I am a very different person today than when I graduated 12 years ago, I can still point to my professors and classes, and pinpoint key influences that led to my current work and life.

Any advice for future Biola art majors?

My only advice for current and future Biola art majors is to enjoy diving in deep, as the road ahead is always more complicated, yet rewarding than the imagination could possibly conjure up. Art has always operated at the intersection of multiple disciplines, philosophies, emotions, and influences. So, it is a unique arena that has massive potential for those willing to invest in finding and using their gifts. The trick is to figure out how to support and stick with it, and the best advice for that is good luck.
