The Torrey Honors Institute is not a rule-oriented program. The “rules” given here are meant to be guidelines and should never be substituted for discussions with your mentor. Instead, think of Torrey as working on a libertarian principle that expects students to pursue their education in effective and creative ways. This liberty is mediated exclusively by the permission and guidance of your mentor.
This handbook is meant to be an aid to that liberty, and is not sovereign in itself. Even so, it is still useful in providing reminders of what is generally expected. If, for any reason, you are not communicating with your mentor, these are the standards to which you will be held.
Students may appeal the decisions of their mentors or tutors to the Director of the Institute. Decisions of the Director may be appealed to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Director is the ex-officio member of all committees and Don Rags.
