We firmly believe that Torrey is not just about developing careful Christian thinkers, leaders and ministers, but also about nurturing and caring for souls. That is why we have developed a mentoring system. Each student is mentored by a faculty tutor. Every younger students also receives peer mentoring from an older student.
In addition to reading and discussing texts, the student keeps a notebook with pre-class reading notes and in-class discussion notes and questions. The student's final grade depends in part on the quality and completeness of this notebook.
Further extra-class requirements each semester include attending a number of context lectures and retreats, writing a major paper, making an in-class oral presentation, and participating in Don Rags, an Oxford-style end-of-semester evaluation.
We also provide a number of optional learning experiences beyond the classroom
such as Torrey
Berkeley, Torrey
Mongolia, and Torrey
Theatre.
We also encourage participation in two unique programs, the STAR
program and the CCCU-sponsored CMRS
program at Oxford University. STAR is a program designed to suppliment home-school
education for high-school aged homes-schoolers. Many Torrey students have taught
in STAR, having an excellent experience. The CMRS program is a semester-abroad
opportunity that Torrey students frequently use, studying in Oxford under University
tutors. For more information, drop by the Torrey office (Sutherland 209).
