The department endeavors to provide a strong foundational core curriculum for the student desiring to pursue graduate study in both the pure and applied fields of mathematical science, and through course work and training students are well prepared for applied mathematical sciences (statistics, computer science, operations research and actuarial science) and the field of teaching.

We have had students ranking within the top 10 percent in the annual Putnam Math Competition for undergraduates in the nation. Graduates have earned degrees from schools such as University of Minnesota, UC San Diego, and Cal State Long Beach. Recent graduates are teaching in many areas of California and the West Coast in junior high schools and high schools, colleges and universities. Some other alumni are working in the computer industry and in the area of statistical analysis.
