Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Modular” delivery format?

The Modular delivery format is a hybrid of online classes in the Spring and Fall semesters, and a two-week, intensive residency on the La Mirada campus in the summers of years 1 and 2. Courses are completed in sets (or modules) where the online portions of each class “bookend” the summer residency. There are two modules of 5 classes each in the MOL program, in addition to courses completed 100% online. Students will need to take two weeks’ vacation from work for the residency portion of the program.

How long is the program and how much does it cost?

The Modular program is a 3 year, 36 unit program. Tuition is $550 per unit for the 2009-10 academic year. Books are an additional $1500 to $2000 (total for program). For students who choose to stay on campus during the two residencies, each two-week period ranges from $400 to $725 for food and housing (prices vary with number of meals per week and student's choice of shared or private room).

How do I know if the Modular format is right for me?

The Modular delivery is best suited to self-motivated individuals, comfortable working with various forms of media and easily able to navigate the Internet. Modular students are not dependent upon weekly face-to-face professor interaction, but value the in-class time offered by the two-week residency. They require the flexibility that a Modular format offers.

What financial aid is available?

Modular students may apply for federal student loans by filling out the FAFSA. Please note that student loans cannot be processed until after you receive word of your admissions status, and can take 6 - 8 weeks to process. Many MOL students also receive funding through tuition assistance programs at their workplace. Check with your employer to see if this option is available to you. The MOL will work with your company to provide the necessary paperwork to allow you to benefit from your employer’s tuition assistance.

What type of technology (hardware and software) will I need?

Computer and internet access is required. The virtual classroom, Blackboard, is a web-based program that needs no additional software or hardware. Blackboard works with most major internet browsers, including Explorer, Firefox, and Sarfari. Students will need a word-processing software (e.g. Microsoft Word or WordPerfect).

How will I be able to interact with other students and professors?

Students interface electronically with classmates and professors in online forums with rigorous online discussions. During the summer residencies, students meet and interact in person with the professors and each other after a semester of electronic dialogue. This residency period is invaluable in creating cohesion among students. The relationships developed in this time serve to promote accountability, encouragement, and networking as students grow in their leadership abilities.
