Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long does it take to complete the M.A. in Christian Apologetics?
For those who would consider themselves full-time students, it is possible to complete the curriculum requirements for the degree in four intensive semesters. For part-time students who work elsewhere, it usually takes six semesters. For distance learning students, please consult the Sample Program Schedule designed for part-time (PDF) and full-time (PDF) students to learn more.

How much time does a distance learning student need to be on campus?
Our distance students typically come to campus for a two-week module session in each of two summers (July). Work is done from home during the spring semester in preparation for this summer session, and work done from home during the fall serves as a “wrap up” to the spring-summer-fall series.
Our distance students are also welcome (but not required) to participate in special weekend courses that occur multiple times throughout the year. These courses could serve as a way to reduce (but not typically remove) the two-week period during the summers.
-
How do the distance courses actually work?
There is a helpful form that explains the structure and layout of the courses in the distance learning format. Please see the Course Instruction Methods for more details.
-
When are classes held for “traditional” on-campus students?
Most of our on-campus students work full-time elsewhere, so we offer our full slate of courses in the evenings. Special weekend courses are also offered throughout the year. A few of our courses are cross-listed with other graduate programs and have additional daytime offerings (in addition to the evening offerings) for our full-time students.

What do graduates go on to do with the M.A. in Christian Apologetics?
Great question. Just as our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, they go on to do a number of different things. For many, this is the first step into some type of ministry, either at a church or in a para-church organization. There has been a recent trend of students who see the value of such a program for one who plans to work with college students. For others already in some type of ministry, the degree serves as a way to “sharpen” one’s apologetics skills.
-
What type of background do I need to enter the program?
Students are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. It is not a requirement that this Bachelor’s degree be in Bible, theology, or a related discipline.
-
Is this program accredited?
Yes. Biola University is accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an accreditation body that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
-
When can I begin the degree program?
We bring in students for both the spring and fall semesters each year. The spring semester typically begins near the end of January. The deadline to apply for the spring is December 1st. The fall semester typically begins near the end of August. The deadline to apply for the fall is July 1st.
-
How much does the program cost, and is financial aid available?
The tuition rate for the Fall 2009 semester will be $449 per credit unit. Our students are eligible to apply for federal financial aid, and are encouraged to visit Biola University’s Financial Aid office to learn more about completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
