Single Subject

The California Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes educators to teach a specific subject, such as English, math, music or physical education. Individuals with this credential are qualified to teach their specific subjects in preschool through adult settings, but most teach in junior high, middle school or high school.

Single subject credential students are required to demonstrate subject matter competency in the subject area they desire to teach. Therefore, students who wish to teach at the secondary level should choose a major in their selected subject area. The teacher preparation coursework can be taken in conjunction with the major requirements.

Students are invited to formally apply to the credential program during LEDU301 Introduction to Teaching, which should be taken during the sophomore year or the first semester of the junior year. Once accepted into Biola's Teacher Preparation Program, students take courses in sequence, which include fieldwork in local schools, Teaching Performance Assessment tasks and student teaching.

The general education and major requirements may be obtained from the respective department or Registrar's Office. Students in the single subject Teacher Preparation Program will receive advising from both their major and the School of Education.
