Master of Arts in Teaching
Whether your teaching career has yet to begin or is well underway, Biola University's flexible Master of Arts in Teaching program will give you the training that you need to make a lasting impact in the classroom.
Through a blend of weeknight, Saturday and online classes, our fully doctored team of faculty members will prepare you academically to teach with confidence and effectiveness. At the same time, a focus on biblical integration and spiritual development will ready you to impact your students and colleagues for Christ.
The Master of Arts in Teaching is a practitioner's degree, designed to give you the advanced skills and understanding for classroom application. The M.A.T. focuses on classroom practices, such as classroom management, distinguishing it from the Master of Arts in Education, which includes a greater emphasis on professional writing, research, theory and preparation for Ph.D. studies.
The M.A.T. program is designed primarily for students with a bachelor's degree who desire to earn a credential while working towards a master's degree. Students may also earn the M.A.T. without the credential if they enter with teaching experience.
Four distinct M.A.T. tracks are available:
- M.A.T. with Multiple Subject Teaching Credential — Meant for students who plan to teach in elementary school
- M.A.T. with Single Subject Teaching Credential — Meant for students who plan to teach in junior high or high school
- M.A.T. for Transitioning Biola Undergraduates — Meant for students who participated in the credential program as undergraduates at Biola
- M.A.T. for Personalized — Meant for students who have teaching experience or have already earned a preliminary credential elsewhere
