Faculty Advisors

Advisor-Student Relationship

The advisor-student relationship is a multi-faceted relationship that involves several actions:

  1. Informing the student of the right classes (i.e. requirements, procedures) that he or she needs to take in order to progress through a major in a timely way.
  2. Monitoring his progress through one-on-one appointments. Be aware of any areas of academic difficulty and discuss where the student can go for assistance (i.e. The Learning Center, Writing Center, Math Lab).
  3. Challenging students to take part in opportunities that will aid in their development and success as a student (i.e. internships, consortium programs, extra-curricular activities).
  4. Assessing if a student’s major fits with her long-term goals, both personal and vocational.
  5. Supporting students in their pursuits and endeavors.
  6. Discussing links and relationships between academic disciplines and occupations/careers. If the student is unclear, assist him in identifying career opportunities and/or refer him to Career Services.
  7. Maintaining an advising file for each advisee.
